Phyllis A. Collmann is a retired nurse whose interest in pioneer stories sprouted from a lifetime of hearing accounts shared by the many patients she treated. Ms. Collman says that the stories of survival she heard while on the job inspired her to write this strength-filled story. She lives in Iowa with her husband of fifty years. Ms. Collmann enjoys poetry, nature, and the fine arts.

My Candle
It's only a tiny flame.
It can light up a room just the same.
It makes shadows dance across the wall.
Sometimes large, sometimes small.
Sometimes friendly, sometimes scary.
At times sad, at times merry.
It takes away my pain.
And lifts my spirit to a higher plain.
A soft sweet odor fills the air.
I have a feeling someone cares.
As I nestle into my chair.
My days work is complete.
As my eyelids close in sleep.
